The digital revolution has turned “Virtual Assistant” into a prestigious, high-demand skill and worthy career for students, graduates, and stay-at-home parents alike. Whether you are looking for more time with family or the freedom to work while exploring the world, learning how to become a VA in 2026 can be the game-changer for you.

In this post, we’ll discuss the necessary skills, the 2026 tech stack, and exactly how to get started as a virtual assistant in 2026

Who Is a Virtual Assistant?

A virtual assistant is anyone who renders services to businesses from the virtual space, like their homes, or any place convenient for them, without having to go to the physical office location. They are either in their homes or their comfort zone rendering their services, and their service provider might be in a faraway city, country, or continent. Take, for instance, someone in Nigeria working as a VA for someone in the United Kingdom, the USA or across borders. Most VAs work or handle tasks that their employers see as unproductive use of their time, tasks that are not in their genius zone or tasks that they find important but don’t have the time to perform these tasks themselves. Some of these tasks are listed below.

Common Tasks Performed by Virtual Assistants

Virtual assistants render a variety of services to businesses. Most times, the services of a virtual assistant are dependent on the needs of the client. While Client A might need help with socials, Client B might need help with operations support. So, the services you offer to your boss as a VA vary from client to client, from business to business. Some of the tasks performed by VAs include

  • Inbox management
  • Administrative support
  • Customer support
  • Social media management
  • Operations support
  • Content creation
  • Website management
  • E-commerce management
  • Bookkeeping
  • Web research and Documentation, etc.

As I mentioned earlier, there are lots of tasks, but the tasks vary depending on the business you are supporting. While a Filmmaker might need help with research for film markets, an Author might need help with research for potential publishers. The tasks are similar, but the industries are different. So most times, the skills gained from supporting one business can be transferred to the next business you support.

Who Hires Virtual Assistants?

Different businesses and individuals hire virtual assistants for different purposes. So, having a VA isn’t limited to a certain industry, leadership level, or group of people. Lots of business owners, CEOs, COOs, Investors, agency owners, retailers, Vendors, Entrepreneurs, and even individuals hire a VA.

I have had to work with an individual who needed help creating a thesis for his research and with a job application. This means that anyone who needs help with tasks outside their comfort zone can hire a Virtual assistant.

Skills You Need to Become a Virtual Assistant in 2026

Just like we go to school to gain knowledge that helps us stand out in the marketplace after graduation, that’s how we also learn and gain in-demand skills needed to excel as virtual assistants. To become a Virtual assistant in 2026, lots of skills are needed, which I will break down into two parts. There are two major types of skills needed as a VA in 2026:

  1. Hard skills and
  2. Soft skills.

Important Soft Skills for Virtual Assistants in 2026

To excel as a VA, you need more than just technical know-how. Soft skills are what separate a good VA from an exceptional one. They shape how you communicate, how you handle pressure, and how you show up for your clients daily. In fact, these skills help you stand out because they manage your attitude towards work and your character as a whole. Some of these skills are

  • Communication skill
  • Organisation
  • Time Management
  • Problem Solving
  • Attention to Details

Communication Skills for VAs:

This goes beyond just typing correctly. When your boss asks for a work summary, can you anticipate what other details they’ll need without being asked? That ability to read between the lines and communicate clearly — written or spoken — is what makes a client trust you with more responsibility.

Organisation for VAs:

You can’t excel in your virtual assistant career if you are not organised. Most of the people looking to hire want you to help them track updates and inform them of what needs to be done. And this is where your organisational skills come to play.

Time Management for VAs

The main reason people hire you is that they don’t have enough time to handle some non-core tasks. Imagine if you struggle with time management. How would you help others manage time? This is why excellent time management is needed to excel as a Virtual assistant.

Problem Solving for Virtual Assistants

This reflects your ability to manage problems that might occur when working. Wait, not like big problems, it could be some of your ability to filter urgent messages and top priorities, identifying some missing details in customer requests and asking them to share the details, identifying areas where business can be automated, managing timezone differences when scheduling between your boss and others and resolving these amicably, identifying missing pieces in businesses and lots more.

Attention to Details as a Virtual Assistant

I once had a client flag an issue with how I labelled their Google Drive files. The difference? One file said “Jane and Janet’s Files”, and another said “July & May’s Files.” That one inconsistency — “and” vs “&” — was enough to get a complaint. Your client hired you to be their second eye. Don’t make them regret it.

The list of Soft skills you need to excel as a virtual assistant goes on and on. As you grow in your VA career, you will learn more skills, acquire more through services rendered and gradually master how to use most of the soft skills to deliver exceptional services to your clients.

So far, we have explored who a Virtual assistant is, who they work with, skills VAs need to excel and people who actually hire VAs. Now, what are the steps needed to excel as an exceptional VA? The steps needed to excel as a virtual assistant mustn’t be followed in a linear form. The following steps are what you should take to become a Virtual assistant.

Note down your skills:

Start by jotting down your existing soft or hard skills. Analyse yourself and be truthful to yourself because pretending to have a skill you don’t have will affect you in the long run. This is the foundation of your new intended career. Noting down your existing skills will help you understand where you are and what you need to learn.

Start learning

This is where the real work begins. Go back to the Hard Skills and Tech Stack section above and use it as your learning roadmap. But here’s what most VAs get wrong — they learn that a tool exists without learning how to use it actually support a client. So as you go through each category, here’s what to focus on:

  • Communication tools — Learn how to write professional messages, create channels, and manage notifications/communication so nothing falls through the cracks
  • Project management tools — Learn how to create tasks, set due dates, and move work from “to-do” to “done.” Your client shouldn’t have to chase you for updates
  • Social media tools — Learn how to schedule posts in advance, not just publish them. Clients need consistency, not last-minute posting
  • File management tools — Learn how to create organised folder structures and manage access permissions. A messy Drive is as bad as no drive.
  • Email tools — Learn how to create labels, filters, and folders. Inbox zero should become your personal goal for every client
  • Data entry tools — Learn how to structure spreadsheets and update records consistently. Messy data is useless data

For learning resources, YouTube is a great free starting point. Jobberman offers solid soft skills training, and a dedicated VA academy gives you the most structured path.

Practice as you learn:

It’s easier to forget what you learned when you don’t practice. One thing about practising is that it gives you real experience and helps you master the skills. That aside, practising helps you build a portfolio.  Many clients will hire you based on what they see in your portfolio. Document everything you do to build a unique portfolio.

Start showing off:

Create social media accounts for your services and document your journey online to build your network. Talk about your skills, talk about new things you learned, and talk about your experience with each skill. The truth is, most potential clients are watching, and building an online presence will help you position better as a Virtual assistant

Decide what services you will offer:

You can start as a “General VA” or niche down into specific areas like Social Media Management, Podcast Assistance, or Email Marketing. One thing I can tell you is that, sometimes, your first clients usually determine the path you follow. You might start working with them and find what they do interesting, then that can help you niche down and support a particular business with a particular thing.

Monetise your skills:

After learning, what comes next is earning. This is where you start monetising your new skills. You can start applying for jobs on social media platforms like Facebook groups, you can also apply on Freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr and Hubstaff, Flexjobs, and lots more. In all, apply strategically on these platforms.
